Relative positioning precision of the wide-angle airborne laser ranging system

چکیده

The positioning precision of ground-based targets is studied as a function of instrument and experiment parameters of the wide-angle airborne laser ranging system (WA-ALRS). The models for range measurements, validated in previous ground-based experiments, are used for simulating aircraft measurements. It is shown that the positioning precision, evaluated from the a posteriori covariance matrix, can be optimized with respect to laser beam divergence, aircraft altitude and number of targets for a given instrument performance. The number of laser shots is then adjusted to yield the desired precision. A precision of ∼1 mm is achieved in the vertical coordinate in a specific experiment assuming only random errors. Most of the systematic errors are believed to be compensated by the adjustment of additional parameters such as trajectory offsets.

Terrain-Referenced Precision Approach Guidance: Proof-of-Concept Flight Test Results

Aircraft precision approach guidance systems require accurate positioning relative to the runway with a high level of integrity. Most precision approach guidance systems in use today require ground-based electronic navigation components with at least one installation at each airport, and in many cases multiple installations to service approaches to all qualifying runway ends. A terrain-referenc...

Airborne laser scanning: basic relations and formulas

An overview of basic relations and formulas concerning airborne laser scanning is given. They are divided into two main parts, the first treating lasers and laser ranging, and the second one referring to airborne laser scanning. A separate discussion is devoted to the accuracy of 3D positioning and the factors influencing it. Examples are given for most relations, using typical values for ALS a...

Light Detection and Ranging-Based Terrain Navigation – A Concept Exploration

This paper discusses the use of Airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) equipment for terrain navigation. Airborne LiDAR is a relatively new technology used primarily by the geo-spatial mapping community to produce highly accurate and dense terrain elevation maps. In this paper, the term LiDAR refers to a scanning laser ranger rigidly mounted to an aircraft, as opposed to an integrated sen...

Analysis and Recovery of Systematic Errors in Airborne Laser System

Although some mature manufactures of airborne laser system (ALS) have been published for some years, however, in china, the development of ALS just is on the starting step. Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics (SITP), CAS is developing a new airborne laser instrument. It is the best difficult task to determining the systematic biases of ALS. The ultimate goal is to determine the master syste...

Continuous-Time Three-Dimensional Mapping for Micro Aerial Vehicles with a Passively Actuated Rotating Laser Scanner

The ability to generate accurate and detailed three-dimensional (3D) maps of a scene from a mobile platform is an essential technology for a wide variety of applications from robotic navigation to geological surveying. In many instances, the best vantage point is from above, and as a result, there is a growing demand for low-altitude mapping solutions from micro aerial vehicles such as small qu...
